Civil Society at the Millennium
Published in Paperback by Kumarian Press (August, 1999)
Authors: Civicus Staff, Marcus Akuhata-Brown, and Civicus
Average review score:

An important contribution to the literature on civil society
This book makes two important fresh contributions to the current debates on the role of civil society. Firstly, it makes the important distinction between the universe of all associational life and civil society. Put differently, all civil society organisations are part of associational life but not all associations are necessarily part of the civil society family. The authors suggest that organisations that are "uncivil" such as those that espouse racism, ethnic intolerance and religious intolerance while enjoying the identity of associations in terms of national laws, they exclude themselves from the family of civil society organisations, by virtue of pursuing interests that are against the public good.

The second new contribution this book makes is to celebrate the distinctive location of the citizen (used in a non-legalistic manner) as the basic building block of civil society. Most of the current literature focuses mainly on organisations and do not explore the contribution of informal social networks and the actions of citizens who are not within organisations.

Furthermore the wide-ranging themes of the book, help give the introductory reader to the subject a good overall sense to the achievements of civil society organisations over the last millennium and anticipate some of the challenges that await in the forthcoming millennium.

I loved it!!!

THE CIVIL WAR IN KENTUCKY
Published in Hardcover by DaCapo Press (April, 2000)
Authors: Kent Masterson Brown and Kent Masterson edited by Brown
Average review score:

Brother Against Brother
This is where brother literally did battle against brother. Kentucky is called a border state (although it is a Commonwealth and not technically a state). As such, they fielded armies for both sides and while their Yankee troops were ruthless and effective, such Rebel outfits as Morgan's Raiders redefined military strategy.

Hard to miss with this wealth of interesting history.

Classic Spirits of the World: A Comprehensive Guide
Published in Hardcover by Abbeville Press, Inc. (March, 1996)
Author: Gordon Brown
Average review score:

Pictorial Guide to the World's Spirits
This book is a very comprehensive pictorial guide to the world's spirits and I understand a labor of love for the late author. This book has all of the major categories such as Brandy, Whiskey, Rum, Gin, Vodka, Tequila and Liqueurs. There are beautiful color pictures of the lands in which the spirits are distilled as well as the distilleries. Many, of the literally hundreds of, liqueurs are broken into their subcategories and covered. One can truly see that this was a labor of love for the author. This even makes a beautiful coffee table book while still an encyclopedic guide.

The Cleveland Browns: The Great Tradition

Author: Bob Moon
Average review score:

must read for Browns fans
Bob Moon's book is a must read for all Browns fans. Reviews the team from the 1946 beginning. Tons of photos of each era. I've used it to read and remember but also as a encyclopedia of Brownie Lore. Better and more complete than the other pubs - I've loaned it out twice and had to re-purchase - they won't bring it back! Lots of statistics, all the rosters and records. Foreword by Hall of Fame receiver Dante Lavelli.

Clinical Anatomy: An Illustrated Review With Questions and Explanations (Little, Brown Review Book)
Published in Paperback by Little, Brown Medical Division (October, 1997)
Authors: Richard S. Snell and Barbara F. Westmoreland
Average review score:

Streamlined yet Comprehensive
The new edition of Snell's Clinical Anatomy-An Illustrated Review with Questions and Explanations provides the perfect accompaniment for its parent text-Clinical Anatomy for Medical Students. The book is based on the format of the progenitor text but is essentially a condensed version of the latter. As such, it is particularly suitable for those readers (medical, dental, allied health science students) who require an easy-to-use quick reference review of basic clinical anatomy which is ideal for exam preparation purposes, or as a stand alone text for first-time students embarking on a clinical anatomy course. One of the most impressive features of Snell's Illustrated Review is the widespread utilisation of detailed tables and figures which enhance the memorisation of anatomical facts and simplify the learning process. Undoubtedly, many students struggle to assimilate the elaborate and at times seemingly inexhaustive amount of information commonly encountered in anatomy lectures - particularly the complex intricacies of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. However, Snell's text manages to present concise yet thorough descriptions of muscles and their origins, insertions, nerve supplies and actions, as well as nicely summarising cranial nerves and the branches of the various plexi and their distributions in a highly accessible manner. Each chapter concludes with an extensive bank of National Board type questions which come complete with both answers and explanation which facilitate test-taking skills and enhance critical thinking. Current diagnostic imaging techniques (radiographs, CT scans, MRIs and sonograms) are also included to demonstrate anatomy as it is often viewed from a clinical perspective. In summary, Clinical Anatomy - An Illustrated Review with Questions and Explanations is an impressive streamlined yet comprehensive anatomical reference which may be used as a high-yield refresher/revision tool in its own right or as a companion resourse to the highly successful parent book, Clinical Anatomy for Medical Students.

Classic in Electromyography
Brown and Bolton's edited book on Clinical Electromyography remains a classic for electromyographers. The chapter on Diabetic Neuropathies by Asa Wilbourn is a logical and concise guide through the maze of manifestations of diabetic neuropathies. The chapter on Autonomic Nervous System by Zochodne and Kihara provides hard to find information on Autonomic testing. Each chapter of this book is packed with clinically useful information. A must read for the serious electomyographer.

Excellent Book for the Wards
This is an excellent book for pediatric residents and medical students in pediatric rotations. The book is organized by symptom e.g. abdominal pain, chronic cough, and it provides a comprehensive list of differential diagnosis, flow charts for diagnosis, as well as short discussions on most common diseases associated with that particular symptom. A must for pediatric rounds.

Clouds of Happiness: The Highs and Lows of Domestic Life
Published in Paperback by (July, 1988)
Author: Helen Brown
Average review score:

Reality is idealism in its least practical form
Helen Brown's enduring insight into the spectacular highs, andthe inevitable lows, of domestic life is an inspiring account groundedon the sometimes harsh notions of realism. Although written a fewyears ago, Helen Brown's "Clouds of Happiness" is an enduring story for all time. Its satiral nature, and sometimes sardonic humour, complements the underlying themes revolving around the turbulence of domestic life. Helen Brown, a mother, wife, columnist and author, has a wealth of experience and knowledge, with which she artistically enlivens this novel. Helen Brown's "Clouds of Happiness: the highs and lows of domestic life" is an anthology of experience and humour that surfaces the global issues of domestic life, giving it a touchingly real face.

Coker: A Mountain Man's Story
Published in Hardcover by Senior Press (July, 1997)
Author: Wesley A. Brown
Average review score:

Coker: A Mountain Man's Story
This is one of the greatest books that I have ever read. I don't even usually like stories of this kind, but this one is unique. The first chapter doesn't have as much action as the rest of the book does, but it introduces the story to you. After that, as you travel with Coker all the way to Oklahoma, you won't be able to put the book down. It is full of action and excitment, along with love and compasion. I can't wait until Wesley Arlin Brown writes another book!
